5 Everyday Habits That Can Damage Your Teeth (and What to Do Instead)

Top Dentists in Brentwood, MO

You brush, floss, and visit the dentist – so your teeth should be in great shape, right? Not necessarily. Even with good oral hygiene, certain everyday habits can quietly damage your teeth over time. Some are so routine that you may not even realize they’re causing harm until you start noticing sensitivity, cracks, or discoloration.

At Brentwood Family Dentistry in Brentwood, MO, we see these patterns all the time – and the good news is, small changes can make a big difference. Protecting your smile doesn’t always mean doing more; sometimes, it’s about doing things differently.

1. Using Your Teeth as Tools

It’s tempting to use your teeth to open a package, tear off a tag, or even hold something when your hands are full. But teeth aren’t designed for that kind of stress. Using them as tools can cause chips, cracks, and enamel wear that lead to more serious dental problems later.

Even if damage isn’t visible right away, small fractures can form under the surface, weakening your teeth over time. These cracks can eventually cause pain, sensitivity, or infection if left untreated.

What to do instead: Keep scissors or a small tool handy for opening packages. Your teeth are meant for eating and smiling – not cutting or prying. If you already have chips or wear, your dentist can restore your teeth with bonding, veneers, or crowns before the damage worsens.

2. Brushing Too Hard or Too Soon

Brushing right after a meal might seem like good hygiene, but it can actually harm your teeth. Acidic foods and drinks – like coffee, wine, or citrus – temporarily soften your enamel. Brushing immediately afterward can scrub away that softened layer, leading to enamel erosion over time.

Brushing too aggressively can also cause gum recession, making your teeth look longer and feel more sensitive.

What to do instead: Wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking before brushing. This gives saliva time to neutralize acids and re-harden enamel. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle circular motions to clean effectively without irritation. Electric toothbrushes with pressure sensors are also great for preventing over-brushing.

3. Grinding or Clenching Your Teeth

If you wake up with jaw pain, headaches, or sore teeth, you might be grinding or clenching at night – a condition called bruxism. It’s often related to stress or poor sleep and can cause significant damage to your enamel and jaw joints over time.

Grinding creates constant pressure on your teeth, wearing down enamel and increasing the risk of fractures, sensitivity, and even gum recession.

What to do instead: Schedule a visit if you think you might be grinding your teeth. Our team can create a custom nightguard that cushions your teeth and absorbs pressure while you sleep. Reducing caffeine and practicing relaxation techniques can also help prevent clenching during the day.

4. Constant Snacking and Sipping

Frequent snacking – especially on sugary or starchy foods – keeps your mouth in a constant acid attack cycle. Each time you eat, bacteria feed on leftover particles and produce acid that erodes enamel. When you snack often, your teeth don’t get a chance to recover between exposures.

Sipping sugary drinks like soda, sweetened coffee, or sports drinks throughout the day has a similar effect, bathing your teeth in acid and sugar for hours.

What to do instead: Try to limit snacks to once or twice between meals and choose options like cheese, nuts, or vegetables instead of sugary treats. Drink water throughout the day to rinse away food particles and neutralize acids. If you do indulge in a soda or sweet drink, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth – and follow it with water.

5. Skipping Dental Checkups

Even with excellent home care, plaque can harden into tartar – something only a professional cleaning can remove. Skipping dental visits allows tartar buildup and early signs of gum disease to go unnoticed. By the time pain or sensitivity appears, decay or infection may already be present.

Regular dental exams allow your dentist to spot issues early and treat them before they become serious. Preventive care not only protects your oral health but also saves time, money, and discomfort in the long run.

What to do instead: Schedule checkups and cleanings every six months. At Brentwood Family Dentistry, we make preventive care easy and comfortable, using advanced diagnostic tools to keep your smile healthy and bright.

Bonus Habit: Chewing Ice or Hard Objects

Many people chew ice out of habit without realizing how damaging it can be. Ice is hard and brittle, and biting down on it can create tiny fractures in your enamel or even crack a tooth. Similarly, habits like biting your nails or chewing pens can put uneven stress on your teeth.

What to do instead: If you crave the crunch, try chilled water or crushed ice instead. Sugar-free gum can also satisfy the urge to chew without putting your enamel at risk.

Protecting Your Smile in Brentwood, MO

Your teeth are strong, but they’re not indestructible. Everyday habits – even ones that seem harmless – can take a toll on your enamel, gums, and overall oral health over time. The best way to protect your smile is to stay aware of these habits and work with a dental team that focuses on prevention and long-term care.

Small Changes, Big Results

Breaking a habit doesn’t happen overnight, but even small improvements make a lasting impact. Whether it’s switching to a softer toothbrush, scheduling your next exam, or avoiding those late-night snacks, every positive change adds up.

A healthy smile is one of your greatest assets – and with mindful care, it can last a lifetime.

If it’s been more than six months since your last visit, now’s the perfect time to take that next step. Contact us to schedule your cleaning and checkup with Brentwood Family Dentistry and keep your smile strong, bright, and protected.

I have been going to Brentwood Family Dentistry for the past three years - after having gone to a different dental practice for more than 30 years. I am very glad that I switched - from the dentists, to the hygienists, to the office staff - everyone I have encountered has been wonderful. I highly recommend this practice.

I was referred here by a co worker after having avoided going to the dentist for 5 years and this was by far the best experience I've ever had. The hygienist Ariana made me feel so comfortable and walked me through everything. The doctor was the same. Highly recommend if you are looking for a new dentist.

If I could give Brentwood Family Dentistry 10 stars, I would! And an extra 10 for Dr. Dan Doherty, who I am lucky to call my dentist. He brings calmness while still explaining things thoroughly; always maintaining a positive outlook regarding options and a care plan. He doesn’t settle for less than 100% satisfaction and that begins the moment you step into his office.

I hadn’t been to a dentist in years, went to one 2 years ago because they had “gas” for nervous patients. It was ok. Then I met the staff at Brentwood Dentistry and they did not use anything but patients, skill & compassion. I finally got the crown I needed for years. They saved my tooth and now I am completely pain free from the day it was put on!!!

Dr. Daniel Doherty is my new dentist, I am happy and thankful to say! I learned first-hand yesterday that he is a brilliant dentist and a truly kind person. I firmly believe you will not meet a finer gentleman, nor a better dentist. It's obvious that he cares about his patients. He painlessly prepared my broken tooth, and made me a perfectly fitted crown, in my first visit, all within 90 minutes from start to finish. Dr. Daniel Doherty makes perfectly fitted crowns in-house. Very few dentists can do that. He employs the highest state of the art technology, and I actually watched him make my crown. I was pleasantly surprised that his prices are extremely reasonable. He and his staff are so friendly and helpful. I am so impressed and grateful to my new dentist, Dr. Daniel Doherty! 😀

Was referred by a friend, took my 6 year old yesterday for his first dental visit. They were absolutely phenomenal. It's a father and 2 sons who are the dentists, both sons have young children and were EXCELLENT with my little guy. He came out feeling like a champ. I HIGHLY recommend them for kids and adults. Very organized, everyone was extremely friendly, they were on time and it didn't take long at all. We will be patients for life.
