What Are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth and gums that are formed to your mouth and replace your lost or removed teeth.  Dentures can be taken out and put back into your mouth. If you have lost all or some of your teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, replacing your missing teeth will bring back your smile and benefit your health.  They are custom-made in our dental laboratory to closely resemble your natural teeth. While they do not feel exactly the same as your own teeth, today’s dentures are very natural looking and are more comfortable than ever.

Dentures improve your smile if you have multiple missing teeth, and they also keep the structure of the mouth intact by supporting the framework around your cheeks and lips.  Dentures also make it possible for you to eat most foods to keep a healthy diet. Most of all, dentures are a good solution to replace teeth that are causing severe pain and oral health problems, such as rotted roots or other serious damage.  Having dentures fitted means that troublesome teeth can be eliminated and replaced with a strong and attractive alternative.

In the past, the artificial teeth that make up dentures were made out of porcelain or plastic, but today, we make more modern dentures out of a hard resin.  With proper dental care, these dentures can last from 10 to 15 years or more.

Full Dentures

With full dentures, a flesh-colored acrylic base fits over your gums.  The upper denture covers the palate (the roof of your mouth), while the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to make room for your tongue.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture rests on a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. Sometimes crowns are placed on some of your natural teeth and serve as anchors for the denture.  Partial dentures are made from a combination of metal and acrylic – which gives them the strength to handle your needs for chewing and speaking, while also looking natural.

Immediate Dentures

As the name suggests, immediate dentures are dentures that are inserted into your mouth immediately.  In fact, this will allow you to begin learning to eat and speak with your new teeth. The advantage of immediate dentures is that you can walk away with a full smile the same day.  A set of immediate dentures may be the best solution while waiting for your permanent dentures. By reducing the pressure on your remaining natural teeth when eating, temporary dentures will let your mouth heal without you needing to make any major changes to your lifestyle.

Flexible Dentures

Flexible dentures are a kind of partial denture, but they are made of different materials than ordinary partial dentures.  Most flexible dentures are made of a thin thermoplastic such as nylon, compared to the thicker, more rigid acrylic used in full dentures.  You may find that flexible partial dentures are a more comfortable fit than other removable partials, especially if you’re still new to wearing replacement teeth.  Also, most partial dentures are usually made with metal parts which can sometimes show. Flexible dentures do not use any metal parts so they tend to look and feel more natural.
